A CONNECTICUT high school is mourning the loss of one of their own after it was revealed that a student had tragically passed away.

It was announced on January 8, 2022, that Teddy Balkind passed away following a hockey game.

Who was Teddy Balkind and how did he die?

Balkind was known as a 10th-grade student at the St. Luke’s School in New Canaan, CT.

He was also known as a local hockey player.

Balkind made headlines in January 2022 after he passed away following a freak accident while on the ice, which sliced his neck.

During a game between St. Luke's and Brunswick School, Balkind fell on the ice, and while he was on the ground, another player who was near him who was unable to stop in time, collided with him, according to officials.

The game was immediately stopped and Balking was rushed to Greenwich Hospital where he died from his injuries, cops said.

“Yesterday, we lost a precious young man in a tragic accident,” St. Luke’s School said in a statement to students, seen by CBS 2.

“Both St. Luke’s School and Brunswick School are in shock as we work to support our students and families. St. Luke’s singular focus at this moment is to care for our devastated community.”

Brunswick School added: “Tragedies such as this are hard to process and impossible to understand. We will do all we can in the coming days and weeks to help and support those in our community and in the St. Luke’s community.”

The young player's death has since gone viral, with many NHL teams and stars sharing their condolences to his family, friends, and teammates.

Many have also posted pictures of hockey sticks outside their doors with the hashtag "sticksoutforTeddy, in his memory.

"The hockey world is hurting over the tragic loss of Teddy Balkind yesterday," Anaheim's Kevin Shattenkirk wrote on Twitter. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the young players from St. Luke's and Brunswick and especially the Balkind family. Rest In Peace Teddy #sticksoutforTeddy."

"Sad to hear about the tragic loss of Teddy Balkind," Anaheim's Adam Henrique added. "My thoughts and prayers go out to the Balkind family."

The National Hockey League has also released a statement, calling Balkind's death a "tragic" loss.

"The National Hockey League mourns the tragic passing of Teddy Balkind, a member of the hockey family lost too soon," the league wrote. "Our prayers and most heartfelt condolences go out to his family, his St. Luke's teammates, and his many friends."
