German authorities are searching for a motive following a Friday knife attack in a city in southern Germany.
A suspect armed with a long knife killed three and injured at least five others in Wuerzberg, a city of nearly 130,000 in Bavaria.
The suspect, a 24-year-old Somali, was stopped by a shot to the leg by police and arrested Friday in the city’s downtown. The man had lived in the city since 2015, most recently in a homeless shelter, according to a report.
Video posted to social media showed people surrounding the attacker and trying to fend him off by wielding chairs and sticks.
“I was particularly impressed by the dedication of many people who tried to stop the perpetrator and tried to keep him in check,” Bavarian Governor Markus Soeder said. “That was really impressive dedication, and my thanks for that.”
