Border Patrol agents arrested two gang members — one with the brutal MS-13 outfit — and a number of illegal immigrants who had been charged with sexual offenses in separate incidents in Texas and California over the weekend.
Agents arrested a 41-year-old man who had illegally crossed the border into California on Sunday evening about 18 miles east of Calexico.
Criminal records showed that the Mexican man was a Paisas gang member with felony convictions for grand theft, robbery, evasion and re-entry of a deported felon, according to a release from Customs and Border Protection.
He was convicted of the charges and sentenced to more than eight years in prison.
In August 2004, an immigration judge ordered the man deported to Mexico.
The man, who is being held in federal custody, faces a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
On Saturday, border agents at the Falfurrias border station near McAllen, Texas, detained a man from El Salvador whose criminal records show is an MS-13 gang member, according to a CBP release.
The man is in federal custody.
Agents later that day at the same station nabbed a man trying to evade the checkpoint and discovered he had been arrested and convicted of first-degree aggravated sexual assault in Bergen, NJ.
The man had been sentenced to nine years in prison.
He was one of three men with sex convictions grabbed by Border Patrol agents in a 72-hour period.
Agents at the Fort Brown border station near Brownsville, Texas, on Friday morning picked up Nelson Guzman-Gomez, who had been convicted of aggravated sexual assault with a child under 14 years old in Harris County, Texas.
He was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison.
Then, Friday afternoon, agents detained a group of 14 illegal immigrants near Hidalgo, Texas.
One man in the group had been convicted of criminal sexual conduct and sentenced to 15 months in prison in New York state.
