This ‘Game of Thrones’ Reddit Theory Just Made the Smartest Point About Season 8 and George R. R. Martin

Spoilers for Game of Thrones are coming! If you aren’t caught up, begone!!

Alright, so you know how most of the internet pretty much loathed Game of Thrones episode 5, “The Bells,” where Daenerys essentially lost it and Cersei got the most subpar death of all time? Yeah, so while some fans are bemoaning showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss for “ruining everything” and others are coping by making memes, another fandom subset has realized that D&D may not actually be at fault for how things went down.

Reddit user u/sam1405 unearthed quotes from Game of Thrones original book series author George R. R. Martin that suggest he might have had something to do with this much-hated ending. Martin—who still has yet to write the last two books in the series, causing the TV show to pace ahead—apparently shared his key ending points with Benioff and Weiss years and years ago, so there’s a chance they were simply following the path Martin laid out for them.

Here’s the thread’s breakdown:

For the record, the user was not downvoted to oblivion and was in fact upvoted by a whopping 24,500, so clearly people buy this. And it’s true that while Martin isn’t a key player in making the show (he doesn’t even read the scripts or see any episodes in advance), he has met with Benioff and Weiss to talk shop before. Martin even told Rolling Stone last month that he thought he’d be somewhat surprised by their show ending only “to a degree” because the major tentpoles will be THE SAME.

“I mean, I think…the major points of the ending will be things that I told them, you know, five or six years ago,” he said. “But there may also be changes, and there’ll be a lot added.”

See? The major ending points will be things Martin told them.

Well, there you have it.
