This week, Quentin Tarantino’s new film, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood was released, with some reviewers calling it the filmmaker’s ‘love letter’ to Tinsel Town.
It’s set in the late 60s, with Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio playing the two lead characters.
Although their parts – Booth and Dalton – aren’t real people, it’s been debated that they are loosely based on Burt Reynold and his stunt double Hal Needham, following how they cope with a changing industry and a changing world.
The movie does also blend reality and fiction, though, with a number of real-life figures from the time being included. Here’s the lowdown on the real people depicted in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
Margot Robbie plays Sharon Tate in the film. She was the most famous victim of the Manson Family Murders, having starred in films like The Fearless Vampire Killers and Valley of the Dolls (for which she earned a Golden Globe Nomination).
She was married at the time to director Roman Polanski, and they lived together in Benedict Canyon. It was here she was murdered by members of the notorious cult-like group, the Manson Family.
Sharon was eight months pregnant when she was killed.
Charles Manson was the leader of the cult, which had around 100 members at the time of the murders.
Throughout his life he had been in prison for various crime, but ipon his release in 1967 he began to attract followers. They moved to Spahn Ranch in California, and lived in a commune, taking hallucinogenic drugs, and with many of the ‘family’ believing Charles Manson was a manifestation of Jesus.
Manson ordered members of his group to commit crimes and committed some himself and he, along with other members, was sentenced to death. When the death sentence was made unconstitutional, this was changed to life imprisonment. He died of colon cancer aged 83 in 2017.
Director Roman Polanski was a well-known film director at the time, and was married to Sharon Tate in 1968.
Some of his well-known films include Knife in the Water, The Pianist, and Ghost Writer,
On the night of the murders he was in London, and he moved back to Europe afterwards.
Since 1978, he has been a fugitive from the US, after fleeing from a sexual abuse charge where he was accused of drugging and raping a 13-year-old girl.
In the film he is portrayed by Rafał Zawierucha.
Steve McQueen has gone down in history as a style icon of film and fashion, and starred in films like The Great Escape and Bullitt.
He narrowly avoided the Manson massacre, having been invited to the Polanski/Tate home that evening but deciding not to go.
Damian Lewis will play McQueen in Once Upon A Time.
One of the victims of the Manson murders, Jay Sebring was a friend of Sharon Tate and a celebrity hairdresser.
At his salon in LA he styled clients including Steve McQueen himself, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, and Jim Morrison.
Warren Beatty’s character in the film Shampoo was loosely based on Sebring.
Abigail Folger and Wojciech Frykowski
Fryowski and Folger were both friends of the Polanskis, and had dined with Sharon and Jay before heading to the house where they were all killed.
Abigail Folger was the heir to the Folger Coffee fortune, and had previously worked as a social worker.
Vojchiech Fryowski, like Polanski, was a screenwriter and producer, and the pair lived together from 1968 until their deaths, often housesitting for Sharon and Roman.
The Manson family
Dakota Fanning plays one of the most well-known members of the Manson Family; Lynette ‘Squeaky’ Fromme. Although she didn’t participate in the murders, she would speak to the media during the trials, and later tried to assassinate President Gerald Ford.
Austin Butler – who is due to play Elvis in an upcoming biopic – stars as Charles ‘Tex’ Watson, one of the members who participated actively in the murders. He is still in prison today.
Catherine Share will be portrayed by Lena Dunham. Another member that didn’t take part in the murder itself, she did spend time in jail for intimidating witnesses not to testify against Charles Manson. She has now distanced herself from the cult.
George Spahn – the owner of the ranch the Mansons lived at – will also feature, played by Bruce Dern.
As a film about Hollywood, there of course had to be actors depicted. These include Wayne Maunder and James Stacy, who both starred in the Western show, Lancer, together.
Connie Stevens, Joanna Pettet, and Sam Wanamaker will also be shown.
Bruce Lee – who had been in a film with Sharon Tate, and taught martial arts to Roman Polanski – will be played by Mike Moh.
