The most terrifying soap moments revealed for Halloween

Over the years the soaps have certainly proved they can strike fear into our hearts. Some of the most terrifying moments have been crafted purely in the name of drama; while others are designed to depict the horrifying circumstances people face in real life.

From Richard Hillman’s evil deeds in Coronation Street, to the early reign of Hollyoaks returnee Silas, here is a look at all those times the soap world has been truly frightening.

Trevor tortures Little Mo (EastEnders)

Little Mo Slater endured endless violence at the hands of husband Trevor Morgan. But there were understated, equally powerful scenes in this storyline that must not be overlooked. As Mo sat tensely at the table one Christmas Day, we knew something awful was on the way – and it was a chilling watch as Trevor pushed her face into her plate of food.

Richard Hillman’s plunge into the canal (Coronation Street)

Richard dealt with his murder confessions to wife Gail by bundling her and the family in his car, before driving at top speed until they landed in the canal. As they all screamed in terror, Richard’s final, haunting words were to shout that he loved them. A rescue mission kept the suspense going as the Platts battled to make it out of the water alive.

Cameron’s Woolpack siege (Emmerdale)

Emmerdale serial killer Cameron Murray took control of the Woolpack pub with a shotgun, causing alarm across the village. He later locked Chas, Debbie and Marlon Dingle in the water-filled cellar. Just when they thought he’d left them trapped and alone, Cameron reappeared behind Debbie in one of the most menacing moments – as we resisted the urge to shout ‘he’s behind you!’

Phelan murders Luke (Coronation Street)

When Luke suspected evil Pat Phelan was behind Andy’s disappearance, he found himself in a car chase with the killer. After a crash, Luke was trapped and we were completely on edge as we watched him desperately try to escape. In one of his scariest scenes, Phelan shot Luke before taking aim at his car until it set alight, sealing his fate.

Dawn kills Malone (Emmerdale)

When corrupt cop Mark Malone terrorised Dawn Taylor, a jaw-dropping twist followed. After being knocked out by Harriet Finch, Malone rose to his feet to attack them both. Screaming in panic, Dawn grabbed his gun and fired three shots, killing him instantly. The scene was so shocking that it earned Ofcom complaints, but this shouldn’t take away from the quality of the drama, with outstanding performances all round.

Sarah’s fatal parachute jump (Hollyoaks)

The soap’s late night spin off Hollyoaks Later aired a particularly frightening death during Sarah Barnes’ trip with Zoe Carpenter. Unhinged with jealousy, Sarah’s girlfriend Lydia followed them, and cut Zoe’s parachute as they got ready for a skydive. But a mix up saw Sarah fall to her death, and us vowing never to book ourselves on a similar adventure – even without the worry of a vengeful ex on the loose!

Gray pushes Chantelle to her death (EastEnders)

EastEnders announced that Chantelle would lose her life at the hands of her husband prior to the week of transmission.  When Chantelle found the strength to tell Gray she was leaving him, he flew into a petrifying rage and pushed her. She landed on top of the open dishwasher, where he left her to die. The episode left viewers sickened by the devastating end to the character’s ordeal with domestic abuse.

Geoff’s attack on Yasmeen (Coronation Street)

Corrie’s Geoff Metcalfe launched a tirade of abuse at wife Yasmeen, having spent several months controlling her. Throwing chips at her, he likened her to a dog before shouting in her face. He then mused over whether to kill her while standing over her with a knife, until Yasmeen fought back. The scene was relentlessly disturbing, and entirely necessary to show.

Silas’s Fright Night (Hollyoaks)

For some time, only Lynsey Nolan knew what sinister senior Silas Blissett was capable of. The suspense reached new heights one Halloween as danger lurked around every corner. Silas had chained up a heavily pregnant Mercedes McQueen, but went on to kill his own daughter Heidi Costello, mistaking her for Lynsey in her costume.

The killer has been at large for years, and recently returned to exact revenge on Mercy and her family through a creepy doll. Scary Mary has got nothing on Silas, and the villagers should be very afraid…
