'The L Word: Generation Q' Star Discusses Sophie and Finley Relationship and Season 3 Hopes

Fans of The L Word: Generation Q are familiar with the relationship between Sophie Suarez and Sarah Finley. They were true best friends before getting together in the second season of the show. But as they continue to date one another, Sophie’s starting to realize that they might not be compatible in that way.

Actor Jacqueline Toboni (Finley) spoke in an interview about their relationship, what to expect in the next episodes, and her hopes for her character if there’s a third season.

What happened with Sophie and Finley so far in ‘The L Word: Generation Q’

When the show started, Sophie (Rosanny Zayas) was in a relationship with Dani Nùñez (Arienne Mandi). The two were set to marry in the season 2 premiere, but the ceremony was interrupted by Finley, who admitted to having feelings for Sophie. Soon after Dani called off their relationship, Sophie and Finley wound up getting together. But problems are beginning to emerge, notably including Finley’s drinking.

Between that and Finley’s lack of direction in life, Sophie is starting to wonder if she made a giant mistake by choosing to be with her. But that’s not to say Sophie doesn’t have her own flaws.

“They both have some baggage that they have to figure out and work through in order to be together,” Toboni tells Metro. “With Sophie, she’s just broke off her marriage and is immediately jumping into something else, so I think she needs to figure out what she wants and what she needs from a partner.”

So the question becomes: “Do they go their separate ways and risk losing each other forever, or do they stick together and work through it even though it’s not right right now?”

The next episodes should provide an answer

Toboni says the next episodes will feature a “breakthrough” and “ups and downs,” but she obviously can’t say much more than that. “If I say another word, it’s going to ruin the finale,” she states.

However, Toboni noted that there would be some growth on Finley’s part. “I’d say Finley is the lead character in her own storyline. Previously, Sophie was the lead character in Finley and Sophie’s story,” she shares.

She also has high hopes for ‘The L Word: Generation Q’ Season 3

The actor adds that she hopes to see Finley on an upward trajectory if there’s a third season of The L Word: Generation Q, which began in 2019.

“I would like her to start building positive healthy relationships outside of a romantic relationship. She can have a romantic relationship, that’s great, but I think she needs more support, without f*cking those people up,” Toboni explains.

And she wants Finley to work on her alcohol issues and her self-esteem.

“I think that’s what Finley needs to work on,” she continues. “Her self-worth. She gets wrapped up in thinking her currency is people thinking she’s fun and her social prowess. The stuff with her family is definitely intertwined too and she uses it [alcohol] as a crutch.”

See what happens when the next episode airs. The L Word: Generation Q comes on at 9 p.m. ET on Mondays on Showtime.
