Ted Lasso season 2: Release date, cast and what happened in series 1

AWARD-winning series Ted Lasso is back for a second series.

The hilarious sitcom has been a hit with critics as well as viewers. Here's the lowdown on the new series…

When is season 2 released?

Ted Lasso season two will be released exclusively on Apple TV+ on Friday, July 23.

There are 12 episodes in the new season.

The first two will drop on the premiere date, then episodes will drop weekly from then on.

Who is in season 2?

Of course, Jason Sudeikis will be returning for the new series.

Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple return for the new series as club owner Rebecca and model-turned-publicist Keeley.

Nick Mohammed, Brett Goldstein and Phil Dunster are also returning for the new series.

Sam Obisanya and Danny Rojas take more central roles in the new series.

Season two has also seen some big names join the cast.

Gary Lineker has joined the cast for the second series of the sitcom.

He shot scenes in south east London with Arsenal legend Thierry Henry. Gary’s MoTD co-host Ian Wright also makes a cameo.

A source said:  “Gary will feature in the next series of the show during a scene where Ted’s assistant Coach Beard, played by Brendan Hunt, is imagining he is out for a night on the tiles in the capital.

“In his dream sequence Gary is in the nightclub, waving and being really friendly with him. Those working on the show were so excited when Gary agreed to appear. He is a huge part of the beautiful game and to have him on board added a really funny twist to the scene.”

What is Ted Lasso about?

Ted Lasso isa sitcom about a US football coach who is hired to train fictional Premier League footie team AFC Richmond.

Jason Sudeikis plays Ted Lasso, a small-time American college football coach from Kansas who has no experience coaching the English game. 

His character is also going through a divorce, making things even more dramatic.

Sudeikis also serves as executive producer on the show.

What happened in season 1?

Club owner Rebecca Welton inherited AFC Richmond from her cheating ex-husband Rupert.

In comes Lasso, who she hires to actually ruin the team's prospects in order to get revenge on her ex.

Season one saw AFC Richmond improve as a team, but ultimately they faced a loss and were relegated from the Premier League to the Championship.
