James Nightingale (Gregory Finnegan) has been determined in Hollyoaks to prove to former flame John Paul McQueen (James Sutton) that he regrets shooting Mercedes (Jennifer Metcalfe), but — with his words having had little effect thus far — the solicitor goes the extra mile and reveals his feelings for the young man.
James was left a shell of his former self when love of his life Harry (Parry Glasspool) was murdered by villainous Breda (Moya Brady), and it took him quite some time to get over the devastating loss.
He became vengeful and angry, and — after learning that Mercedes was responsible for the hit and run that left Grace (Tamara Wall) fighting for her life — he sought her out in The Loft and shot her, leaving her for dead on the dancefloor.
In the months that followed, the solicitor regretted his actions on that fateful night — especially when he came to learn that Mercedes wasn’t the person responsible for Harry’s demise.
John Paul’s return left him somewhat optimistic at the prospect of a future with him, and the two embarked on a passionate romance — that is, until the truth about James’ actions came to light during Liam’s (Jude Monk McGowan) devil’s dinner party.
John Paul refused to hear James out, but — in the coming episodes — they come into each other’s orbit once more, and this time James tells the young man that he loves him.
Later, John Paul shows up at James’ flat, and James reaffirms his love, revealing that he believes they belong together.
How will John Paul react?
