With news the Duke of Edinburgh was taken to hospital on Wednesday, This Morning hosts Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford were keen to hear Giles Brandreth and Vanessa’s thoughts on Prince Philip’s health. However, they weren’t expecting to hear about an awkward encounter between Vanessa and the Duke, which left everyone laughing.

“A phenomenal man of commendable fortitude and everything else,” Vanessa began.

“But Ben and I are still recovering from our sole encounter with him when he seemed to ball up from the wide blue longer and say to Ben, ‘Why are you here?’

“Ben looked at me, we were at some sort of function, Ben had had a few sherbets, I think I had as well and he looked at me and couldn’t for the life of him remember why we were here.

“And actually, I couldn’t remember either, I thought, ‘Why are we here?’

“I turned to Christopher Biggins and said, ‘I’m with Biggins,’ and the Duke of Edinburgh looked absolutely disgusted.

“No one knew why were here and the Duke of Edinburgh looked absolutely horrified and strode off.

“We both thought we were going to end up in the tower. If he’s watching this from his hospital bed, we are awfully sorry, we should have found out why we were there.”

Meanwhile, Giles, who often wears a unique jumper depending on the topics of conversation for This Morning’s View, pair tribute to the Duke with his outfit.

Sharing a photo on his Twitter account of him wearing a white shirt and striped tie, he explained: “I’m wearing my National Playing Fields Association tie for ⁦@thismorning in case we’re talking about the Duke of Edinburgh.

“It was the first national charity HRH took on when he married Princess Elizabeth in 1947. Prince William is the charity’s president now.”

Prince Philip spent his second night in hospital after he was admitted on Tuesday evening “as a precautionary measure”
