Daniela Ruah has teased what’s coming up for Kensi Blye and her husband Marty Deeks (played by Eric Christian Olsen) in the upcoming season of NCIS: Los Angeles. After setting adoption plans in motion in the last instalment of the CBS spin-off, their attempts to start a new family will run into even more challenges in the coming weeks.

NCIS: Los Angeles star Daniela Ruah has previewed some major curveballs for Kensi Blye and Marty Deeks in season 13.

The spin-off will return in just two weeks time to kick off a brand new season following the bittersweet finale before the summer.

In the first episodes of the next instalment, Kensie and Deeks will be taking on the next stage of their marriage after their struggles with infertility.

Now they’ve agreed to adopt the child, the two agents will realise the process will be much more complicated than they anticipated.

“They just want a little kid to love,” Ruah told TV Insider during a recent interview.

However, their demanding careers with the NCIS threatens to disrupt their plans to give a child a loving home.

Moreover, a case involving Asian American hate crimes early in season 13 will urge them to rethink certain aspects about their approach to parenthood.

Ruah explained: “Kensi and Deeks ticked the box [on the adoption application] that race wasn’t an issue but didn’t think what that might entail.”

“You want this child to relate to their natural-born culture and fit in.”

Kensi and Deeks’ adoption plans will give the series a chance to tackle some serious themes this time around.

Although the two agents clearly aren’t concerned about the race of their new baby, they may not have considered the challenges and expectations which come with raising a child from a different background to their own.

The actress confirms the show’s producers have spoken to specialists and thoroughly researched the adoption process to prepare for the upcoming storyline.

“I know how much joy and fulfillment having children has brought my life,” Ruah added.

Daniela Ruah is herself the mother of two children with her husband David Olsen, the older brother and stunt double of Deeks star Eric Christian Olsen.

The series regular will undoubtedly channel her own experiences of parenting into her character’s forthcoming storyline.

It hasn’t been confirmed in which episode Kensi and Deeks will welcome the NCIS newcomer, but fans will certainly be thrilled to see the couple introduce the latest – and cutest – addition to the series.

Unfortunately, a new baby or young child being added to the mix will also make the coupled agents even more vulnerable to outside threats.

Finally, Ruah said: “Kensi’s seen the most ugly, terrible criminals, [so she and Deeks] just want love and positivity in their home life.”

Her comments will surely remind fans Kensi’s nemesis David Kessler (Frank Military) is still at large following his escape last season.

Having already sent the agent a threatening message at NCIS HQ, it’s only a matter of time before he returns to take his revenge.

NCIS: Los Angeles season 13 premieres Sunday, October 10 on CBS.
