James Bond has had a long and healthy life in cinema. After 25 films, the upcoming No Time To Die is due to make waves in cinemas with leading man Daniel Craig stepping down shortly after it comes out. The franchise itself is worth over $20 billion, making it one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time. So then, it is a big deal when a new Bond is about to step into the limelight, as all the attention will invariably be placed upon them.

A lot of actors have been rumoured to be taking on the role of 007 in the past year.

Reports surfaced in August that Tom Hardy had already been cast in the role – however these reports were never confirmed nor denied by Bond’s owners, MGM.

Since then, a number of names have been seen online as the “next” James Bond – including Idris Elba, James Norton, and even One Direction’s Harry Styles.

The latest actor featured in the long line of rumours is none other than Star Wars’ Finn actor, John Boyega.

With talks surrounding a brand new Bond on everybody’s lips, Black Panther star Letitia Wright was recently asked about who would be a better fit for the upcoming Bond revitalisation – John Boyega or Daniel Kaluuya.

The star responded: “I say Boyega because I know he would love it.

“Daniel would do the work and stay behind – he likes to stay low key, so that’s too much [for him]. He can still play Bond too, but I know John Boyega would just… yeah.”

Boyega himself was then asked about Wright’s recommendation in a recent interview, leaving him extremely excited.

The actor yelled: “Ooh!” before saying: “Hey, listen.

“[With] Steve McQueen directing? Let’s do this.

“We can show them something different – we [would] still bring that sophistication – James Bond has to be James Bond – but we could do something with that.”

Considering Boyega is one of the most popular British actors working in Hollywood today, he could certainly be on the front line for the new role.

He has stiff competition, though, as he is also going up against Outlander star Sam Heughan.

Heughan recently spoke out about whether he would want to be Bond, as well.

In a new interview he explained: “Obviously, yes – it would be a big yes. Of course, any actor would want it.

“But I also have a theory that any reasonably well-known British actor who’s worn a suit instantly has their name thrown into the ring by fans.”

At the moment the odds are stacked in Hardy’s favour, who is best known for portraying the titular character in Venom, and from appearing in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.

According to Paddy Power, the 43-year-old actor has odds of 2/1 to becoming the next man of mystery.

With a few sequels on their way to cinemas – including Venom 2, and a reported Mad Max sequel – will he have enough time to appear in consistent Bond films?

James Bond No Time To Die is due for release in cinemas on April 2, 2021.
