Soap star Aaron Anthony has reportedly quit Emmerdale due to an ongoing racism row that’s left stars Matthew Wolfenden and Isabel Hodgins absent from the soap. An investigation was launched after an alleged clash on location where offensive remarks are said to have been made. However, Aaron is seemingly unsatisfied with what’s happened and has chosen to leave the ITV soap as a result.
The soap has been embroiled in allegations that a mixed-race actress was subjected to an inappropriate comment and had her accent mimicked.
As a result, stars Matthew and Isabel, who both categorically deny any wrongdoing, ceased filming for the show while enquiries were made.
Their Emmerdale characters David Metcalfe and Victoria Sugden have temporarily been written out of the soap.
Script writers swiftly came up with a storyline that saw the couple leave the village for a holiday.
However, it’s now been reported that Aaron, who plays Ellis Chapman in the show, is “bitterly angry” over the event and will be leaving the show.
A source has spoken out about the actor’s feelings about the incident and subsequent investigation.
They’ve claimed Aaron has told Emmerdale bosses he won’t be returning to the show when his contract expires.
The insider revealed: “Aaron is bitterly angry about this situation and he has had to be persuaded to come back to Leeds to film his scenes in recent months.
“He has done some filming over the last couple of weeks, but the understanding is that those scenes will be his last.
“He has been very vocal in his opinions about the allegations and about the way in which the enquiries have been handled by the bosses.
“He now feels his position on the show is untenable,” the source told The Sun.
Meanwhile, both Matthew and Isabel continue to be absent from screens and are not expected to return until next year.
Express.co.uk have contacted Emmerdale and Aaron’s representatives for comment.
Aaron joined the cast of Emmerdale in December 2019, taking over the role of Ellis from Asan N’Jie.
The actor is also known for his roles in medical dramas Holby City and Doctors.
Meanwhile, both Isabel and Matthew joined the ITV soap back in 2006.
The pair had been a part of a prominent storyline on Emmerdale this year, however, writers have now had to work around their break from filming.
Victoria and David were last seen on-screen on October 28, with the couple heading off to visit Victoria’s stepmother Diane Blackstock (played by Elizabeth Estensen) in Portugal.
Emmerdale continues Monday at 7pm on ITV.
