Ed Sheeran fans convinced new single Afterglow is a tribute to wife Cherry as he sings about 'waiting on a miracle'

ED Sheeran fans are convinced his new single Afterglow is a tribute to his wife Cherry as he sings about 'waiting on a miracle'.

Ed married his childhood sweetheart last year, and the couple welcomed their first child, daughter Lyra Antarctica earlier this year.

And now Ed's fans are sure his new track is about his beloved wife Cherry.

They were convinced the line: "We were love drunk, waiting on a miracle," from his track Afterglow was an ode to his new family.

One fan wrote: "We were love drunk, waiting on a miracle" afterglow // ed sheeran hayszxst to be Cherry and Lyra."

Another said: "Imagine being Lyra and having Ed Sheeran sing you to sleep with this song."

Ed sings: "We were love drunk, waiting on a miracle

"Trying to find ourselves in the winter snow.

"So alone in love like the world had disappeared

"Oh, I won’t be silent and I won’t let go."

Fans believed the "snow" reference was a shout out to daughter Lyra too who they believe was conceived in the Antarctic because of her middle name.

Ed surprised fans by releasing his first single – one year after announcing a hiatus from music.

The 29-year-old singer thrilled fans with Afterglow, which was shared on his social media page this morning.

Posting a video of himself singing the new track, Ed confirmed that its release does not mean a new album is on the way as he made a prompt return to "dad land" after sharing.

He wrote: "Hey guys. Afterglow is a song I wrote last year that I wanted to release for you. It’s not the first single from the next album, it’s just a song I love, and hope you love too.

"Enjoy ! Have a safe and happy festive break and New Year’s. Back to dad land for me now, ciao x"

He'd teased the release yesterday, promising fans a "Christmas present" in the cryptic post.

Sharing a photo of the track's scribbled, multi-coloured artwork, Ed simply wrote: "11am GMT tomorrow. A Christmas present."

This time last year, the singer had told  fans that he was "taking a breather to travel, write and read" as he confirmed a hiatus shortly after learning that his wife Cherry was pregnant.

Eight months later, he and Cherry welcomed their first child – a little girl called Lyra Antarctica.

They confirmed her arrival in September, with Ed sharing a picture of some baby socks alongside the message: "A quick message from me as I have some personal news that I wanted to share with you… Last week, with the help of an amazing delivery team, Cherry gave birth to our beautiful and healthy daughter – Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran.

"We are completely in love with her. Both mum and baby are doing amazing and we are on cloud nine over here. We hope that you can respect our privacy at this time. Lots of love and I’ll see you when it’s time to come back."
