EastEnders star reveals 'tricky' drawback of kissing through a perspex screen

EastEnders star Louisa Lytton has revealed that she and James Bye encountered a problem when first using the perspex screen for a kissing scene.

It was revealed last month that the BBC One soap would attempt to ‘cheat’ social distancing measures with a series of innovative techniques.

Together with a group of core directors, Jon Sen — the serial drama’s Executive Producer — devised these methods, one of which includes kissing via a perspex screen.

Speaking on BBC 5 Live about the social distancing measures — and the methods used to ‘cheat’ them — actress Louisa Lytton, who portrays Ruby Allen, said: ‘It’s funny how naturally you get used to it.

‘All of a sudden I’m two meters away from everybody at work from the moment walk in the door.

‘I had to [kiss through a perspex screen]. That was fun!

‘The issue that me and James — who play Martin — the issue we found was that our noses were touching the glass before our lips!

‘it was a tricky one, but I’ve seen some of the clips back and, honestly, it looks amazing! The crew have been unbelievable.

‘What they have created in such a short time … I’m really really proud.’

The short clips that have been released thus far indicate that the hard work has paid off, as it’s impossible to tell that a screen used to capture the moments in question.

However, you needn’t take our word for it, as EastEnders returns to screens tonight (September 7), so you’ll be able to see such methods in action for yourself!

There will be compelling stories on offer, as a new era for the Walford-set soap commences.

EastEnders returns Monday September 7 at 8.05pm on BBC One.
