Amanda Owen was welcomed onto James Martin’s Saturday Morning this weekend and chatted about her hit Channel 5 series Our Yorkshire Farm. TV chef James enthused about Amanda’s farming show and compared it to Jeremy Clarkson’s Amazon Prime Video series Clarkson’s Farm. While chatting about the two hit shows, Amanda suggested their success was down to the fact they depict “real life” on a farm.

James made it clear he was thrilled to have Amanda on his Saturday morning ITV show and chatted to her all about life as a shepherdess.

He praised the star for her series Our Yorkshire Farm but was quick to draw comparisons with another popular farming show.

The chef said: “The great thing about your show I think and dare I say it there’s another one at the moment – Clarkson’s Farm. Do you know what I mean?

“You can show all these fancy shows about the countryside and everything looks perfect.

“But life is hard, it’s not perfect, and I think that’s the value of a show like yours and we’ve seen it with Clarkson’s Farm.

“You know, you spend all year doing all this and you’re making nothing,” James commented.

Amanda agreed: “I know. But, in a way, I guess that’s what gets the viewers and that’s what gets people on board because isn’t that an accurate reflection of real life?

“You don’t always win every battle,” she remarked.

The Yorkshire Shepherdess continued: “Ideally you want to come out on top every time.

“But, the weather is against you, there are so many variables coming at you and against you, and at the end of the day that probably is pretty much everybody’s life.

“So, when the people are tuning in and watching that programme, they’re feeling it.

“They are sort of getting the highs and the lows and you need to give them that don’t you?” Amanda said.

Keen to know more about the origins of Our Yorkshire Farm, James said: “You cannot even imagine the popularity of the show.”

Amanda replied: “Honestly it’s been a real eye-opener because at the end of the day we’re just such an ordinary family who happens to live at this extraordinary place.

“You could never have envisaged that there would be this big uptake. I’d have tidied up if I’d have known,” she joked.

James commented: “Yes, but that was the whole magic of it wasn’t it really?

“To see you progress and particularly see your family grow and progress, isn’t that the whole magic of it and the purity of it?” He asked.

The shepherdess remarked: “I think so, the fact that it’s unscripted, unchoreographed, and I guess it’s that kind of Yorkshire idea that you just get your head down and get on with it.

“You know, throw us a challenge and we will take it on,” Amanda added.

She also opened up about the challenges of farming and how the industry has been forced to adapt in recent years.

“The onus has changed on the environment and the countryside and what that can bring you,” the shepherdess explained.

James Martin’s Saturday Morning airs Saturdays at 9:30am on ITV.
