Disney Movies to Binge Before Their Live-Action Remakes

They’re back and better than ever. The Walt Disney Company has a bunch of movie remakes in the works, including Mulan, Aladdin, and even Lady and The Tramp. Lucky for you, some of these movies are available for streaming on Netflix (for now.) See our list of Disney movies to binge before their live-action remakes premiere.

Our wish has been granted — 27 years after the original release of Disney’s Aladdin, the Walt Disney Company is finally making a live-action version.

Will Smith portrays the Genie, and Mena Massoud portrays the title character, Aladdin. Jasmine will be played by actress Naomi Scott. (You may recognize her from the Disney Channel Original Movie, Lemonade Mouth.) In the trailer, fans see their beloved characters come to life, set to the iconic song, “A Whole New World.”

Disney’s live-action Aladdin premieres May 24, 2019.

‘Lion King’

Simba, Nala, and the gang return to theaters in this CGI remake of The Lion King. The original movie, released in 1994, won the Golden Globe Award for “Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.”

The cast for the live-action reboot includes celebrities like Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Donald Glover, and Seth Rogen. Original Lion King voice actor, James Earl Jones, will reprise his role as Simba’s father, Mufasa.

Disney’s The Lion King premieres July 19, 2019.

‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’

A live-action prequel is still considered a remake, right? Especially when it’s one of the worst villains in Disney’s history. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil tells the story of the antagonist from Sleeping Beauty before the spindle and before the sleeping spell. Actress Angelina Jolie reprises her performance of Maleficent in this movie. Actress Elle Fanning portrays Princess Aurora.

The continuation of the original Maleficent movie, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, premieres on October 18, 2019.

Disney’s live-action Mulan is already in the works, according to a post on the Disney Instagram. Actress Crystal Liu Yifei will portray the title character, Mulan. It is unclear if this new movie will be a musical, but rumors speculate that songs like “Reflection” and “I’ll Make a Man Out Of You” might be excluded from this rebooted story.

“We’re still exploring the role that music’s going to play in it, but for sure there will be music,” Director Niki Caro said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Disney’s 1998 animated film, Mulan, is currently available for streaming on Netflix. Once Disney launches its own streaming service, entitled Disney+, the Walt Disney Company will most likely remove movies by Marvel, Pixar, and Disney from Netflix.

According to Cosmopolitan, the Mulan live-action premieres March 27, 2020.

‘Lady and The Tramp’

Fans do not know much about this live-action, CGI-style remake. However, Disney announced that this movie will premiere sometime in Fall 2019. According to IMDB, the cast features prominent actors including A Star Is Born’s Sam Elliott, Thor: Ragnarok’s Tessa Thompson, and singer Janelle Monáe.
