Caroline, 60, and Johannes, 33, became the latest causalities of Strictly Come Dancing on Sunday evening when the judges decided to send the couple home. Before bidding farewell to each other, the couple spoke to Zoe Ball, 50, on BBC spin-off show It Takes Two to reflect on their final performance as well as their time in the competition. After the comedian and actress caused a stir with viewers for licking the professional dancer’s arm during their Cha Cha Cha performance, the former contestant addressed whether it was part of the plan for her to do this.

Asked if she enjoyed her final performance on the dance floor, the actress said: “I don’t think I’ve made a secret of the fact I’m quite fond of Johannes.

“I don’t know whether anyone spotted that, so it was really nice to do a dance where I was able to show my absolute adoration of him.”

Zoe then enquired as to whether the lick was part of the original routine, to which the former contestant explained: “We didn’t actually practice it in rehearsals.

“It came out during the dress run and it was given the stamp of approval by people who know about that sort of thing.

“And I would do it again tomorrow,” she told the presenter, adding she was “entirely unapologetic about it.”

It’s fair to say those watching at home last weekend weren’t too pleased with the unplanned dance move and took to Twitter to complain.

One viewer wrote: “Goodbye Caroline. Keep your licking for private occasions. #strictly,” with a second adding: “That was just weird. Caroline licking her pro dancer’s arm was bizarre. #Strictly.”

A third posted: “Caroline licking Johannes’ arm was a bridge too far #Strictly,” with a fourth remarking: “@bbcstrictly #Strictly Still not over Caroline licking Johannes. WTF?!”

Some feared she would do it again in the dance-off, with a fifth commenting: “I love Caroline but I think she can leave the licking out of her second go at this. #Strictly #scd.”

Knowing the clip was going to be shown again on the spin-off programme, a sixth pleaded: “Don’t show the licking clip again! #ItTakesTwo.”

However, Johannes didn’t seem too deterred by his partner’s unconventional methods to show him how much she enjoyed dancing with him.

After Zoe reminded him he also left the competition after performing a Cha Cha Cha with former Coronation Street actress Catherine Tyldesley, 37, last year, the professional said he wasn’t going to let it become a “curse”.

“Caroline changed the narrative for me. She said to me let’s have fun and when she said that, I was like, ‘Oh my goodness, where have you been all my life?’”

“That’s what we wanted. We wanted to have fun and we did that and I’m a very proud person,” Johannes explained.

The pair bowed out after going up against EastEnders actress Maisie Smith, 19, and her dance partner Gorka Marquez, 30, during Sunday’s results show.

After each couple performed for a second time, the panel unanimously decided to send home the comedian after she scored a 24 out of 30 on Saturday evening.

Having wanted to be a dancer since she was a child, the former contestant said: “I have had the honour and privilege of working with some of the greatest dancers this country has ever known.”

“I mean I really believe it, I think they are absolutely fantastic. But, of course, my greatest gift coming on this show is Johannes,” Caroline said.

The professional dancer added: “Oh my gosh, what a woman, thank you, thank you again, thank you, thank you, thank you.

“I don’t know what to say, because it was a beautiful one, I had a beautiful journey with you, thank you my darling, thank you.”

Fans were also upset the couple had got the boot, with one writing on Twitter: “I’ve never cried watching Strictly before, but last night I did! So sorry to see you and Caroline go. You were both so amazing to watch, not only your dancing but your relationship.”

Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 7:15pm on BBC One.
