Man Utd transfer news: Red Devils and Tottenham drift as Bayern Munich 'step up' interest in Norwich star Max Aarons

MANCHESTER UNITED trail Bayern Munich in the race to sign Norwich defender Max Aarons.

That's according to bookmakers Betfair, who've priced the Bundesliga heavyweights at 6/4 to clinch the youngster's signature.

Bayern identified the right-back a couple of seasons ago and have remained in contact ever since, according to the Daily Mail.

Canaries sporting director Stuart Webber revealed an overseas club did try to sign Aarons during the January transfer window.

But both player and club rebuffed the approach.

Webber said: "The only interest was in Max. No other players.

"We decided not to act on that interest, with Max’s blessing I must add.

"It was from abroad and wouldn’t have been quite right for him and definitely wasn’t right for us at that time."

But that could change in the upcoming transfer window with the Bavarian giants prepared to 'step up' their interest.

Bayern have already bolstered their defensive ranks with 22-year-old centre back Dayot Upamecano and Reading's left-back Omar Richards.

Manchester United are second in the race for the 21-year-old.

The Red Devils were previously ODDS-ON to complete a transfer but have now drifted out to 2/1 with Betfair.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants a new right-back to provide competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka after seeing how Alex Telles galvanised Luke Shaw on the opposite flank.

Tottenham are the 6/1 outsiders of the three-runner field.

But former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson thinks Aarons would snub a move given the competition from both Serge Aurier and Matt Doherty.

Robinson told Football Insider: "He has been linked with a move to Spurs for a long time now but things have changed.

"Serge Aurier has improved hugely this season, he has been a lot better under Jose and Matt Doherty’s arrival has given him the wake up call that he needed.

"I cannot see Aarons getting any game time. Where would he play? Doherty and Aurier would play ahead of him."
