GERARD PIQUE became the best-paid defender in world football after DEMANDING to Barcelona that he earn more than Sergio Ramos, according to reports.
A number of leaks from Barcelona's financial department have surfaced in recent days thanks to El Mundo, who have revealed details behind a number of player contracts and other dealings.
One such leak details the lucrative contract awarded to former Manchester United star Pique.
The Spanish newspaper reports Pique caused "very serious damage" to the club owing to his own private interests and those of the club conflicting.
Pique demanded £124million gross across his five-year contract from 2017 which followed on from him telling the club he wanted to be paid more than compatriot Ramos.
Ramos is said to have earned just under £11m net per year at Real Madrid, a figure which Barcelona topped for Pique's deal.

Then Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu awarded the Spaniard with a contract valuing just over £13m net a year.
This £13m also did not include an additional £6m gross "tax bonus" to compensate for a VAT claim from the Spanish treasury.
Additionally, Pique's shareholder status in production company Kosmos Studios also caused some major issues for the club.
Kosmos Studios was the company behind Antonio Griezmann's controversial documentary 'The Decision' in which he revealed he would not be joining Barcelona.

The Blaugrana's club chiefs were none the wiser prior to this revelation, and reportedly addressed the possibility of sanctioning Pique but pulled out due to "media pressure".
Griezmann did eventually join the club two years later, but he has since gone back to Atletico Madrid on loan after flopping at the Nou Camp.
His loan has a strange clause inserted whereby if he plays over half their games this season Atletico will have to pay £34m in a transfer fee.
But this is only triggered if he plays 45 minutes in each game, which has subsequently seen Atletico limit his playing time to around 30 minutes per game.
Pique looks set to be moved on from Barcelona in the coming summer, with the club having already identified a replacement in Inigo Martinez according to Mundo Deportivo.
