Diego Simeone explains Jurgen Klopp handshake snub after immediately running down tunnel after Atletico loss

ATLETICO MADRID manager Diego Simeone claims he didn't mean to offend Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp when he snubbed a post-match handshake.

Atletico lost a dramatic Champions League encounter to the Reds, who picked up a late 3-2 win at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, and Simeone stormed down the tunnel after the full-time whistle.

The Argentine head coach claims there was nothing personal behind this as he "never shakes hands after a match".

The 51-year-old added that next time he sees Klopp he will definitely extend his hand to him.

Simeone said after the match: "I never shake hands after a match, because I don't like it.

"It isn't healthy for either the one who wins or the one who loses. That's the way I see it.

"But now when I see [Klopp] I will shake his hand without problem."

Liverpool got a two-goal lead in the first half thanks to Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita.

But Atletico came back and equalised with a brace by Antoine Griezmann, who was then sent off for a boot in the face of Roberto Firmino.

The Merseysiders were then awarded a penalty when Diogo Jota was carelessly fouled in the box by Mario Hermoso and Salah stepped up to score his second of the night

Simeone's decision to turn down a handshake appears to stem from referee Daniel Siebert changing his mind after pointing to the spot again.

Jose Maria Gimenez appeared to be hauled down by Jota, but after a lengthy consultation with the VAR monitor the official opted to reverse his original decision.

Klopp stood furiously outside the tunnel after his counterpart's decision to ignore him.

The German head coach said after the game: "We don't like that but yes the situation is clear.

"I want to shake his hand. His reaction for sure, like mine, was not so cool.

"The next time we see each other we will shake hands definitely. It's nothing.

"He was obviously angry, not with me but with the game. There is nothing else."
