Barcelona rule themselves OUT of Haaland and Mbappe transfer races as director confirms ‘Aubameyang will be our No9’

BARCELONA have seemingly ended their pursuits of Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.

Instead, Pierre Aubameyang will be trusted as Barcelona's No9 next season instead of making a move for the thrilling youngsters.

Barcelona director Mateu Alemany said: “Pierre Emerick Aubameyang will be Barcelona’s number 9 next season.”

Adding: “We are more than happy with Auba and his performances.”

As recently as last month Barcelona were trying to sign PSG's electric Mbappe on a free contract.

Borussia Dortmand's Haaland was also on the radar, with the 21-year-old rumoured to be interested in joining the club and Barca said to have been willing to cough up big bucks for the talented youngster.

However, Alemany appears to have ruled out the possible transfers and expressed his approval for Aubameyang.

And when asked about the possible transfers he said: “I don’t speak about players who have a contract with other clubs, that’s not our style. We keep an eye on all situations regarding the market.

"The nine for next year is Aubameyang and starting from that point, we will keep an eye on any opportunities.”

Aubameyang has been in incredible form for Barcelona, scoring four goals in five games in his first month at the club.

The instant fan favourite has cemented his place in the starting XI with crucial performances since his shock January move from Arsenal.

Alemany spoke to the press shortly before Barcelona's shock defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt, crushing their dreams of claiming silverware this season.

Despite Barcalona's amazing recent form they struggled in the 2-3 Europa League defeat at the Nou Camp, with their two goals only coming in as consolations in injury time.

Head coach Xavi said after their unexpected quarter-final defeat: "We have not played in the best way.

"It is a very big disappointment. It's a shame because we had hopes in this competition."

Reportedly there were 30 000 Frankfurt fans in the stadium and the Barcelona president Joan Laporta said: "Frankly what happened today makes me feel embarrassed and ashamed. There were many fans of the other team and not many of ours."

Xavi said it had "affected us" – placing some of the blame for their loss on the crowd fiasco that saw season ticket holders flog their tickets to travelling German fans.

While Aubameyang is confirmed to be playing a part at Barcelona next season, there is still speculation around many players' fates with Ousmane Dembele, Gavi and Ronald Araujo's contracts set to expire.
