PER MERTESACKER has a book out and he has been telling some home truths about Arsenal – and about football pundits.
Mertesacker, who now runs Arsenal's academy, joined the Gunners from Werder Bremen back in 2011.
And it appears that one commentator hadn't done his homework on the Germany international.
Mertesacker said: “Some fans had probably been wishing for another Tony Adams [when I signed].
“My name likely meant little to them.
“Robbie Savage wasn’t thrilled. He said: ‘I don’t rate Mertesacker at all, he wasn’t convincing at Real Madrid’.
“Savage had confused me with Christoph Metzelder.”
ARSENAL legend Nwankwo Kanu is gutted that compatriot Alex Iwobi was sold to Everton.
The Nigerian told Goal: “I would say they made a mistake, 100 per cent.
“Why they let him go, I don’t know.
“He’s a boy who, in and out, is Arsenal. He always wanted to do his best for the club. He loves the club, but not only that he can play football.
“What he brings week in, week out, the fans need to appreciate that.
“I think he is still young and those are the type of people you want in the team, people who grew up here, who knows everything about the club and wants to die for the club.
“He was one of them, so for us to lose him and to let him go, was a shock. I couldn’t really believe we did it, but that’s football.”
UNAI EMERY lost a battle with Arsenal's board to keep Nacho Monreal for the clash with fiercest rivals Tottenham, according to reports.
Spanish left-back Monreal was instead sold to Real Sociedad – ruining Emery's tactical plans ahead of the 2-2 draw on September 1.
The Athletic say Emery thought Monreal would expose weakness down the Spurs right in the Premier League clash at the Emirates.
But Gunners chiefs reportedly refused to hold up the 33-year-old's exit and they sold the ex-Spanish international a day before the North London derby.
ARSENAL could be in with a chance of signing long-term target Yannick Carrasco with reports suggesting his club Dalian Yifang are lining up a replacement.
The Gunners missed out on the Belgium international when he left Atletico Madrid back in 2018.
Carrasco reportedly earns close to £175,000 a week in China and may have to take a wage cut if he returns to Europe.
But it appears increasingly likely that he will do so because Italian outlet Calciomercato reckons his employers have already identified his replacement in Napoli's Dries Mertens.
HENRIKH MKHITARYAN was so desperate to escape his Arsenal hell, he sacrificed over HALF of his wages – and didn't even ask Roma about money before joining.
He said: “I have to enjoy playing football, no matter the place. In England, I no longer felt happy.
“I got a call from my agent and I wanted to come, because it was a great opportunity for me. I didn't even have a discussion with my agent about money.
“Maybe I was not fitting so well in English football, so I think a change was good.
“The last month at Arsenal I was not happy, so that's why I said it was better to come to Roma and to get happy and to get the pleasure from playing football again.
“Now I am in Rome and I focus on them. This is not a step backwards as great football is played here. I wanted to change scenery and for me it is an opportunity to be seized.”
