It’s almost Halloween and parents and carers across the country are busy getting their children’s Halloween outfits ready for the big day. The annual event dates back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which was observed in the UK and Ireland. Halloween costumes were originally used to ward off evil spirits as the ghosts of the dead returned to Earth.

While the meaning of Halloween may have changed for some people these days, the tradition of wearing spooky costumes has remained.

Kate Middleton is one such parent who will be buying costumes for her children.

She previously bought Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s Halloween costumes in her local Sainsbury’s supermarket.

Just two years ago in 2019, the Duchess of Cambridge was spotted in her local Sainsbury’s in Hardwick Industrial Estate, Norfolk and was overheard asking some of the children in the shop what they were going to dress up as.

Prince George and Princess Charlotte were with their mum and followed her around as she did her Halloween shopping.

The Duchess was seen using the self-service checkouts and was followed by a bodyguard.

Mum-of-four Kathy Whittaker later spoke of her surprise to see the Duchess browsing the clothes rails in the supermarket.

“Another shopper said that Kate was in the shop near the clothing and pointed where she was to me. I just couldn’t believe it,” Kathy told The Mirror.

“She was with Charlotte and George looking at Halloween outfits but her bodyguard was kind of watching people with phones and telling them no pictures.

“I managed to get the photo as she was at the self-service check out.

“You just don’t expect it to happen, you’d think Kate would shop in Waitrose or Harrods.”

The supermarket is a short drive from her and William’s Anmer Hall residence.

This was the only time Kate was spotted shopping in Sainsbury’s.

She was seen browsing the clothing section of Sainsbury’s in King’s Lynn in 2020, whilst in 2018 she went to The Range in King’s Lynn to find herself a bargain.

It is unknown if the Duchess and her husband Prince William have any Halloween plans this year.

The Cambridges split their time between Anmer Hall and Kensington Palace, their royal residence in London.

Anmer Hall is on the Queen’s Sandringham Estate and was used as William and Kate’s full-time home between 2015 and 2017.

Speaking about Kate’s 2019 visit to Sainsbury’s, Kathy was quoted by the local newspaper, the Wisbech Standard, as praising the Duchess for doing “normal” things.

She said: “It was lovely to see her [Kate] just being a normal mum shopping with her kids, she doesn’t live far away so I suppose this is her local supermarket.”

She added: “It was so lovely to see the Duchess doing normal stuff that we all do.

“It was so lovely to see her, she is always beautiful. You don’t expect to see that when you go shopping. I couldn’t concentrate on my shopping.”

The paper reported Kate was wearing black trousers paired with a black polo neck.
