I made a terrible mistake in a card I sent to my sick friend

DEAR DEIDRE: I’VE made a terrible mistake and I’m mortified.

A neighbour of mine, who I’ve known for 20 years, was recently diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer.

Like me, she is only 55. I was so shocked and upset that I thought it would be nice to send her a card.

But when I wrote my message inside, I did something really stupid.

Instead of writing, “I’m thinking of you” I wrote: “I will miss you so much.”

It was only after posting it I realised how hurtful and thoughtless my message would seem to her. The poor lady isn’t dead yet.

I saw her husband on the street and apologised profusely.

He said: “It’s OK, don’t worry.”

But I can’t stop thinking about it.

DEIDRE SAYS: What you said was heartfelt.

You will miss her because she has been in your life for two decades – and you were in shock. It only shows that you care.

Do keep in touch with her and don’t let this one comment spoil what time she has left. Why not give her a call?
