As the designers of a rare Kyoto-based Japanese fashion brand, Koichi Watanabe and Ryutaro Kishi took advantage of their home turf, staging their fall digital show in the grounds of the architecturally striking Kyoto National Museum. The glass facade of one of the museum’s newer wings formed the ideal backdrop for the collection of timeless, elegant pieces.

The look: The designers showed a series of modern suits, luscious knits and classic outerwear in easy but expertly tailored silhouettes and a neutral palette of earth tones. The incorporation of subtle kimono elements was an additional nod to the ancient Japanese capital that the brand calls home.

Standout pieces: Jackets that crossed over in the front and tied with a matching fabric belt were chic in high-quality suiting fabrics. Another jacket, in black satin with silk jacquard shawl lapels and sleeve cuffs, was tied with a rope belt and paired with graphite gray, relaxed-fit trousers with button tabs at the ankle for anelegant look.

Takeaway: Watanabe and Kishi’s beautifully constructed, refined take on modern suiting was universally flattering, while still paying homage to the pair’s roots in Japan’s most historic and culturally important city.
