This Reality TV Star Tried to Cure His Pink Eye with Breast Milk

We can always count on reality stars to give us wacky insights into their world, and former Bachelor star Arie Luyendyk Jr. proved that theory to be correct when he shared that he had pink eye with his 673k Instagram followers.

Instead of you know, going to a doctor, Luyendyk decided to ask his followers if they thought he should follow his wife’s advice to put breast milk on his eye. “Lauren said that breast milk is actually a remedy for that…Does breast milk cure pink eye? I’m going to give it a shot, what do you guys think?”

Luyendyk documented the entire ordeal on Instagram Stories (you can see the screenshots here), and he reported that one attempt left him with “breast milk all over my face.”

But while Luyendyk claimed that Lauren had been the one to champion the breast milk mission, Lauren said that she “tried to talk him out of it. It says for kids and babies but he’s convinced.” In a later update to the pink eye saga, Luyendyk said that the breast milk did help, and he felt a lot better.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology says that most cases of pink eye will resolve on their own in about a week or two. If you want some relief, you can take an over-the-counter pain killer, or put a warm, damp compress on your eyes.

Interestingly, The Academy made it a point to clarify their stance on putting breast milk on an infected eye—”Blogs and social media posts sometimes recommend putting breast milk into a child’s eye if they have pink eye. There is no science that supports using breast milk for pink eye and it could be more harmful than helpful.” Sorry Arie!
