The Chase host Bradley Walsh named Shaun Wallace, 61, the Dark Destroyer when he joined the show back in 2009. His nickname on the show has been frowned upon in previous times, most recently by lawyer Paula Rhone-Adrien on Lorraine last year. In a conversation about racism, she revealed she had banned her child from watching the show as he was “the only Chaser defined by the colour of his skin”.

Shaun however has said he has no problem with being referred to by the term.

“For me I have no issues with the term Dark Destroyer,” he told Express.co.uk.

“I’m dark, I’m proud, I’m black and I destroy people will my intellect.”

The quizmaster echoed these words in response to a Twitter user last year who backed Paula’s opinion.

Nav commented: “@lorraine Have been saying for ages, why does @ITVChase’s @TheShaunWallace have to be the only Chaser defined by their skin colour.

“None of the others are – this needs to change. Completely agree with @FamilyLawGuruUK.”

He replied: “But I’m not defined by the colour of my skin. I’m black who intellectually destroys contestants.”

Abbie added: “They all have intimidating names.. the beast is called the beast because of his size.

“All of their names are amazing!”

Others had also called for a change as they branded the term racist.

Shaun is one of six chasers on the show alongside; Mark Labbett, aka The Beast, Jenny Ryan as The Vixen, Anne Hegerty as The Governess, Darragh Ennis as The Menace and Paul Sinha as The Sinnerman.

In 2020, they competed together for the very first time for Beat The Chasers.

The show sees brave contestants going up against three to six of the quizmasters for a chance to win life changing money.

At times, the chasers have clashed over wrong answers and time wasting during tense rounds.

During an episode last year, Bradley asked the chasers which author created the Oompa Loompas, the characters in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Shaun buzzed in and answered the question correctly, but took longer than usual.

Despite the chasers winning, Mark hit out at his co-star, shouting: “You can’t do that, Shaun.”

When the host asked what happened, Shaun replied: “I don’t know, I’d rather take some time and get it right.”

But Mark interrupted, shouting: “Absolutely not! t’s not your time to waste, that’s a terrible sin.”

Mark ate his words in the following episode and apologised to Shaun.

The quizmaster said despite their heated exchanges on screen, it’s never taken personally.

He added: “We just get over it, we’re all human and we’re going to make mistakes.

“The banter and the camaraderie is as strong as ever.”

The Chase continues today at 5pm on ITV.
