Former S Club 7 member Jo O’Meara has spoken out to share her support for Jesy Nelson, months after she quit Little Mix.
Despite being the lead singer in the popular noughties band 42 year old Jo, who has just 19 when she rose to fame, revealed she felt similar insecurities to Jesy, 30, and was also body shamed.
Jesy previously revealed how being in the band had taken a toll on her mental health and has since pursued solo singing career.
Jo, like Jesy, enjoyed incredible fame with a S Club during their four-year run that saw them win two Brit Awards and their 11 singles all reached the Top Five in the charts.
Despite the incredible success Jo has admitted she felt like “the ugly one” in S Club as a result of the body shaming she faced in her years in the limelight.
Jo told The Sun: “When I look back, I wasn’t that big really. But because I was standing next to three absolutely stunning girls, I was always ‘the ugly one that sang the songs’.
“It made me feel very insecure as a singer and as part of that group. I did have a hell of a lot of insecurities to overcome.
“Obviously there wasn’t social media back then. But the headlines would be ‘Fat Club 7’ and ‘Flab Club 7’ and it would be a photo of me.”
She continued: “I can totally relate to Jesy and how she feels because it’s a very real thing, body shaming. It’s a horrible thing to be on the receiving end of.
“I don’t know what advice to give to people out there because I don’t know the answers. I don’t think I overcame those issues for a very long time.
“It’s only now I’ve overcome it, and I can honestly say I’m the happiest I’ve ever been.”
Jo has recently undergone a health kick and “given up smoking and alcohol”.
The former S Club 7 star shared a new snap she posted on Instagram Stories last year, revealing she had also overhauled her diet and kick-started an exercise regime.
Displaying an impressive before and after, the singer explained that she’d gone on a health kick and now feels “like a different person”.
