Naga Munchetty ‘jumps down co-star’s throat’ over name mispronunciation at new job

Naga Munchetty reveals that she doesn't like soup

Naga Munchetty, 45, admitted she wasn’t impressed when her BBC Radio 5 Live colleague accidentally pronounced her name wrong when she started her new job as host of the mid-morning program. Presenter Nihal Arthanayake was left feeling “embarrassed” at his mistake but the BBC Breakfast host revealed all was forgiven.

In the last final minutes of her first show on the airwaves, Naga and Nihal spoke about what was in the works this year for 5 Live and he quickly revealed he had corrected his mispronunciation of her name.

“I’m so glad you’re part of the Radio 5 Live family Naga,” Nihal beamed, as he welcomed her to the team once again.

“Now that I’m saying Naga and not Narga.”

The BBC star laughed out loud as she replied: “We had words!”

Nihal continued: “[You] jumped down my throat when I brought my Sri Lankaness to it and you were like, ‘No! It’s Naga!”

He chuckled as he added: “The only two Asians in the building and one of them gets the other’s name wrong…

“I mean come on, it was an embarrassing moment.”

Naga laughed as she said: “You’re forgiven!”

But that wasn’t the first time this week that Naga has been involved in a debacle of names.

On the first day of her new job she confessed that she had made a similar mistake, too.

She confessed she had called her BBC colleague Nicky Campbell by the wrong name, confusing him with the popular hair care brand, Nicky Clarke.

“I made my first mistake before I even started the program this morning,” she giggled as she told listeners earlier on in the program.

“By getting Nicky Campbell’s name wrong!”

Luckily the journalist found it quite funny and hit back with a little joke.

“I called him Nicky Clarke!” Naga continued.

“He took it rather graciously actually.

“He said that he will aspire to be a hair coiffure in the future.”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One and Naga’s Radio 5 Live slot will begin at 10am.
