Everyone was thrilled when Kimberley Walsh announced in December that she was expecting her third child.
The ex-Girls Aloud star will be welcoming a sibling for her boys Bobby, six, and four-year-old Cole in June. So there’s plenty to natter about when new magazine sit down for a call with the 39-year-old, who is married to former pop star-turned-property developer Justin Scott.
“I’m really excited,” she tells new magazine. “I’m like, ‘How am I so big already?’ Then I realise I’m six months along.”
As well as the challenging task of homeschooling the sons she has with 38-year-old Justin, Kimberley and her old bandmates have been supporting Sarah Harding throughout her battle with breast cancer.
“Sarah knows we have her back whatever,” she says.
Here, the singer lifts the lid on her pregnancy journey so far, the sisterhood she shares with Girls Aloud and reveals whether a fourth child is on the cards…
Congratulations on your happy news, Kimberley. Is being pregnant a nice distraction from everything that’s been going on?
Yeah, it’s been amazing. It was really good timing because I could hibernate. Even though it felt like the world had stopped for a while, it gave me such a focus. It felt like such an exciting thing to look forward to. Once I told the boys, it’s been a real buzz for them, too.
Did you have morning sickness for a while?
I did feel the most sick this time around. I think it’s because I was doing nothing. I was very aware that everything tasted awful to me. Previously, I’ve been busy so I’ve always had that distraction. But I’m so fortunate – it seems to just switch off for me at around 10 weeks. For the sake of the kids it’s good, because I’m back as Mum again.
What’s it been like looking after your two boys in lockdown while being pregnant?
This whole period of time has been challenging, I’m not going to lie. I never thought that homeschooling would be so challenging, but the reality is they just don’t want to do it. Bobby is only six, so he doesn’t understand the importance. We’ve had our moments where we’ve both cried, but then we go into hysterical laughter. It’s been hard.

How do you feel now that Bobby’s back at school?
Thrilled! [Laughs] No, I do feel happy – for him as well! I know he’s used to being home now, but it’s so important for him to be there and to be around his friends again, as well as having the authority of teachers. Bobby’s such a confident little thing and he needs that kind of discipline.
Are Cole and Bobby quite different personalities?
Cole has become Bobby’s little mini-me. I think because Bobby is such a strong person, he knows he needs to step up and be that character too, otherwise he’ll get lost in his big brother’s shadow. I’ve been surprised at how confident he’s got from spending so much time with Bob. But in general, he’s a much softer character. He’s a proper mummy’s boy. I can do no wrong in his eyes. He’s such a little cutie.
So are they super-excited to be big brothers?
Very much so. I didn’t plan to leave such a big gap between the three, but actually once I had the two so close together, I realised how hard it was. Now it feels like the nice thing about having a bigger gap is that they can experience it, too.

Is Justin looking forward to becoming a father again?
He’s also got a daughter [Chloe, 22, from a previous relationship], which means he’ll be a dad-of-four, so he thinks he’s done with having any more. That’s fair enough! At first I think it took him a minute to get his head around it, but now he’s looking back at old videos of the boys when they were younger and it does really melt your heart when you remember what they were like. I think he’s getting in that headspace now.
What kind of dad is he?
He’s just brilliant with babies. He’s got a very nurturing way about him. That’s when he really comes into his own for me.
Is having more kids an option?
I think it’s a no from us both! [Laughs] But I knew I wasn’t done with two kids. I knew I wanted one more. But after this one, it will just round things off nicely.

Do the two of you ever resort to playing good cop/bad cop?
The boys are way more bothered about their dad. I’m just a noise in their ear. He [Justin] doesn’t shout, so maybe it’s because I raise my voice. They know if Dad doesn’t look happy then there’s something wrong. I’m quite happy to have that, to be honest. Without it, I feel like I’ve got no control. At least I do have that tool. I can say, “I’m going to go and get Daddy.”
Definitely. Who are you mostly in contact with from Girls Aloud?
We’ve all been in contact a lot. Obviously, with the past few months, where we’ve received the sad news about Sarah, it’s made us be in contact more regularly than we would be normally. As much as this is a tough time for us, it’s nice that it’s given us the drive to spend time together.
You said you’ve become a real sisterhood since Sarah fell ill…
Yeah, it always was that way for us. We’d been together for 15 years and you don’t survive that long if you don’t have a deep friendship. People think some of us are closer than others – and that’s absolutely normal – but in terms of friendship it’s so much deeper than that when you’ve gone through those experiences. Sarah knows that. She always did. Hence why us girls will always be there for each other.

Do you think Sarah’s really appreciative of that?
She knew we had her back whatever, but she is glad she’s got us because we’re like sisters.
Are you all hoping to reunite the band someday soon?
That’s something that isn’t really in our minds. All we’re thinking about is helping Sarah.
Can you tell us about your latest collection with Regatta?
Over the years my style has become a lot more practical. With two boys and being constantly outside, I’m always in activewear. But I still want to look alright because I get recognised! My most recent spring/summer collection is very classic. The colour palette is navy, white and coral. It’s really easy to wear in the summer. I’m so happy with it.
