Kelly Ripa and husband, Mark Consuelos, have a very close bond with all three of their children. Their second-born, Lola, recently left for college, leaving Ripa and Consuelos one step closer to the empty-nester life. That said, Lola still cringes at her celebrity parents, according to Ripa.
Lola Consuelos is the second of three children
Ripa and Consuelos eloped to Las Vegas in 1996, about a year after they met and fell in love on the set of All My Children. Their son, Michael, was born in 1997. The eldest Consuelos child attends NYU with a focus on film and television production.
Lola is following in her brother’s footsteps — sort of. She lists herself as a 2023 graduate at the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU Tisch. Could this be Ripa’s way to vicariously live her tongue-in-cheek dream of becoming a singer?
The website for the school says Lola’s program is the “first and only program of its kind to provide professional business and artistic training toward a BFA in recorded music.”
Consuelos told Us Weekly his tab-keeping annoys Lola at times.
“I check in so much,” he said. “My daughter thinks I’m obsessed with her.”
Ripa wants her children to have a typical college experience
The mom of three previously shared her concern over her children attending college so close to their Manhatten home.
“The whole thing is — college is where you start establishing yourself as an independent person — when you send your kid away to college, if your kid stays sort of local, you get all of the hassle of sending your kid away to college and none of the sympathy,’” she said on On Air With Ryan Seacrest.
“That’s not good because if she feels homesick, I have to say to her, ‘You can’t come home. You have to work it out.’”
Ripa continued, “I treat it all the same; I did the same thing with my son [Michael]. I’m like, ‘You’re gonna have to figure out how to be an adult — this is when you figure it out.’”
Ripa and Consuelos still have one more at home. Joaquin is nearing his 17th birthday.
Ripa and Lola have a close relationship
The Ripa-Consuelos crew do everything in sync. Even when Consuelos is off shooting Riverdale in Vancouver, he stays connected to his wife and kids until his return.
Lola and Ripa have a tight bond. Though, Ripa often jokes about Lola’s continued disapproval of anything she says or does.
Lola recently made her Instagram page public, giving the world a glimpse of her love of family and a strong sense of style. Ripa revealed that the 18-year-old typically declines family photos, so the new shots Ripa shared on Live With Kelly and Ryan are that much more incredible.
“I did not run this by the children, my husband — that is me trying to run into the photo to catch myself in the photo, too,” Ripa said. She flashed the pictures, taken by photographer Miller Mobley.
Lola’s look in the photo has become part of her signature style. She wore similarly-styled slip dresses in other photos and appears confident and self-assured. This is one reason is exactly why this one thing her parents do “mortifies” her.
What ‘mortifies’ Ripa’s daughter?
Consuelos and Ripa recently told People about their daughter’s unique style.
“She’s always been cool. He clarified that he and Ripa “have nothing to do with it.”
Ripa chimed in to echo the sentiment.
“We have nothing to do with it literally because she’s mortified by everything we put on.”
Consuelos noted the benefit of having a daughter with fashion sense saying he asks for advice from time to time.
“You know, she’ll let us know if something’s bad,” he said.
Ripa joked that Lola gave up on helping her.
“She doesn’t even bother with me. She just feels that what I wear is embarrassing and awful,” she said. “But then I think that means that I’ve gotten something right,” adding, “I don’t think your teenage daughters should like what you’re wearing.”
Lola’s embarrassment of her universally cool parents is the most relatable thing on the planet. If your kids aren’t criticizing your style, are they even your kids?
