The 34-year-old wore a crystal mini-dress which was attached to, well, an actual chandelier fixture that orbited her waist and had working lights.
She ‘accessorised’ with a matching chandelier headpiece on top of her blonde wig, and diamond-studded heeled loafers – because you can’t really wear trainers when you’re a walking light fixture.
And what can we say? She lit up the room. (Sorry.)
The extravagant look was in collaboration with Moschino’s Jeremy Scott, who has dressed Katy a number of times for the Met Gala.
Scott told Vogue of his muse’s look: ‘Who has ever been to a ball that did not have a chandelier? The idea of elegance itself is quite camp and I wanted to play with that concept, poke a lil fun at it with a loving nudge.
‘The look is extremely complicated, perhaps my most complicated creation to date. There is a built-in corset consisting of 18 steel bones and two hidden battery packs to illuminate the lights.
‘I mean, who wants to wear a chandelier that doesn’t light up!’
Perish the thought.
The concept took six weeks for Jeremy’s team to make, with thousands of Swarovski crystals being added to the dress before actual chandelier pieces from Swarovski’s lighting range (yep, they do lighting) were hung from the frock.
Now that’s dedication to the theme. Katy, we salute you.
Celebs who weren’t so strict with the rules included Kim Kardashian, who ignored the ‘camp’ notes but undoubtedly looked incredible in beaded latex from Thierry Mugler.
Karlie Kloss, Demi Moore and Gwyneth Paltrow were among those wearing absolutely normal red carpet dresses – and don’t even get us started on the black tuxedo brigade. Taron Egerton, we expected more from you.
