Kate Garraway, 54, took to social media last night to share a picture of her 11-year-old son burying his head in the sofa after Italy won the Euro 2020 title. The Good Morning Britain star went on to thank the England football team for uniting the country and for inspiring a new generation despite their defeat.
Kate said it was “heartbreaking” to experience their loss, while sharing a picture of her dejected son.
In her latest snap, Billy, who Kate shares with her husband Derek Draper, could not hide his disappointment.
It follows an earlier post, which saw her youngest child celebrating after Gareth Southgate’s team beat Denmark and made history by securing a place in the final.
The mum-of-two, who also shares daughter Darcey, 15, with her spouse, posted her update in view of her one million followers.
“God it’s heartbreaking isn’t it – but thank you #englandteam for getting us close enough to feel a united moment of joy – and for giving a whole new generation a chance to believe.
“#nextstoptheworldcup #stillproud #euros #football,” she added.
It was the first time the England squad had played in a major tournament final since 1966.
Kate and football fans up and down the country are now looking forward to the 2022 World Cup.
Many took to the comments section of her post to share their thoughts.
“Absolutely heartbreaking but they done us proud,” (sic) one follower said in agreement.
“Seeing the kids upset is the worst… but yes. – let’s be proud of this wonderful young England team! The best is yet to come,” another added.
“We’ll be back, Bill. Didn’t they do us proud!” a third remarked.
“Yes they did us proud. United us all. Takes courage to step up to take penalties.
“Bring in the World Cup,” a fourth person chipped in.
The game started off well with Luke Shaw scoring a goal in the first two minutes at Wembley but an equaliser from Italy took the game to extra time.
With no goals scored in the additional half an hour it inevitably went to penalties and the Three Lions lost 3-2.
Kate was not the only celeb who took to social media following last night’s historic game.
Singer Adele made a rare appearance on Instagram to share a photo of herself proudly wearing an England shirt.
“You did us so proud!
“You brought our game home and brought us all together,” she told her 39.2 million followers.
