Singer Miley Cyrus knows a lot of people in the entertainment industry. After all, she grew up in the spotlight. And many of them have said things less-than-flattering things about her over the years. But Cyrus knows she can count on one friend, Ariana Grande, to have her back.
Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus have known each other for years
Though one started on the Disney Channel and the other on Nickelodeon, Grande and Cyrus didn’t let that get in the way of their connection. If anything, they bonded over leaving their respective kid’s TV shows to create their new image as music superstars.
Aside from frequent award show run-ins, Cyrus and Grande relished performing together. When the former relaunched her backyard sessions in 2015, she invited her friend to join her for a cover of the Crowded House hit “Don’t Dream It’s Over.” The two reprised the number in 2017 for Grande’s One Love Manchester benefit concert.
In 2018, Cyrus noted she’d “been texting” with Grande, telling Andy Cohen for SiriusXM, “I’ve been trying to start a real relationship and not try to ask her to work or collaborate too much. But I feel like she needs a friend, and I need a friend. And I would love to start that relationship more.”
Grande commended Cyrus and her choices in 2013
Though just a rising star at the time, Grande was just as outspoken in 2013 as she is today. When asked about her fellow pop star, she offered supportive words. “She’s an adult. She can do whatever the hell she wants, honestly,” the singer said in an interview with Reuters (via her YouTube channel).
Grande continued, saying Cyrus “looks amazing. She looks gorgeous. She looks stunning, and she’s having so much fun.” The artist offered a message for those speaking negatively about Cyrus. “If her choices aren’t for you, don’t look at it, move on, talk about something else, worry about bettering your life, not hers — she’s fine.”
She didn’t stop there. “Her life is the best it could be right now, you know? That’s what bothers me about people and about society. It’s like, ‘shut up,’” finished Grande.
Cyrus used Grande’s words to express her feelings years later
More than seven years after Grande spoke about Cyrus, and both stars continue to make headlines. Cyrus shifted to country, and then to rock music for her album Plastic Hearts. And she’s kept doing whatever makes her happy. While sharing her 2021 tour dates, she touched on this, using Grande’s 2013 comments.
“I don’t know what y’all wanna see more. My back tat or me in concert,” Cyrus wrote on social media, sharing a photo of her new lower-back tattoo of a dragon and tiger fighting, along with her upcoming summer and fall shows. As for how anyone else feels about the ink? “P.S. MY opinion on YOUR opinion,” she wrote, adding a clip of the video of Grande from 2013 to speak for her.
