Coroner rules Emmerdale star Andy Devine – who played Shadrach Dingle – died of ‘hospital-acquired pneumonia’ after being ‘unable to get up following a fall’

Emmerdale star Andy Devine, who was born as Peter Devine, died of pneumonia after a fall, a coroner has concluded.

The actor – best known for playing Shadrach Dingle in the ITV soap between 2000 and 2010 – passed away in January, aged 79, and it has now been concluded that he died of ‘hospital-acquired pneumonia’.

Sefton Senior Coroner Julie Goulding said Andy was on the floor for about an hour after he had ‘lost his balance resulting in a fall’ and was ‘unable to get up until his carers arrived.’

She explained: ‘Peter had a significant number of serious underlying clinical co-morbidities and, not withstanding all appropriate care and treatment, [his] condition deteriorated culminating in his death.’

His character, Shadrach was very popular during his decade on the Dales before he passed away in an emotional alcohol abuse storyline in 2010. 

Shadrach died in an emotional July episode which saw him tragically drown in a stream on the Dales, after collapsing from liver pain.

He was the husband of Faith Dingle and father of Chas Dingle and Gennie Walker, and was often involved in near-misses in nearly a decade on the soap.

He also appeared in several episodes of Doctor Who story Frontier In Space, playing a Draconian Guard as well as playing Bernard in hot Channel 4 series Queer As Folk.  

Before starting his acting career, he served in the Royal Navy in the 1960s.

He passed away in January, with the cause of death unknown, but the tragic news has only just been made public.

Public records confirmed that Andy died on January 27, as reported by The Sun. 

Twitter tributes poured in on Monday after the news broke, with one fan writing: ‘Saddened to learn that Andy Devine (Shadrach Dingle in Emmerdale) has died. What a actor (and character).’

One penned: ‘Sad to read the news Andy Devine has died. Back in January it seems. ‘Best known as #Emmerdale’s Shadrach Dingle, he played Betty’s wedding photographer in a 1995 episode of Coronation Street, returning in 2000 as a radio DJ.’  

Another wrote: ‘RIP iconic #Emmerdale Actor, Andy Devine. What a talented, charismatic Actor and what a complex, funny, interesting, funny, flamboyant, unpredictable, intriguing character he played as Shadrach Dingle in the show. Thoughts with Andy’s loved ones’
