Digital Underground lead vocalist and producer Shock G has died at the age of 57.
“Our son, brother and friend, Gregory Jacobs, also known as Shock G, suddenly passed away today,” his family said in a statement on Thursday. “The cause of death is currently unknown.”
They added, “We truly, truly appreciate all the outpouring of love and concern. Please keep us in your prayers at this very difficult time.”
Gregory Jacobs, who performed also under the pseudonym Humpty Hump, was found dead Thursday at a hotel room in Tampa, Florida, TMZ reported, quoting Shock G’s father, Edward Racker.
The news of Shock G’s demise was first broken by his Digital Underground bandmate Chopmaster J.
“34 years ago almost to the day we had a wild idea we can be a hip hop band and take on the world through it all the dream became a reality and the reality became a nightmare for some. And now he’s awaken from the fame long live shock G Aka Humpty Hump and Rest In Peace my Brotha Greg Jacobs,” he said in an Instagram post on Thursday.
Shock G is also the co-founder of Digital Underground. Chopmaster J and Kenny K joined him to form the hip-hop group in the late 1980s in Oakland, California.
