If you’ve seen a hair commercial over the last decade, you’ll know that keeping your scalp healthy is a vital part of having long, strong locks. From preventing dandruff to removing excess oil, scalp-care proves to be a lot more effective — and easy — than we thought.

The scalp has more sweat and oil glands than anywhere else on the body and, as such, needs to be taken care of if you’re looking for healthy hair (via Refinery29). When you support the root, the rest of the follicle can grow uninhibited. Dermatologist Neil Sadick tells Allure that, “Keeping the hair follicles clean prevents the blockage and inflammation that leads to thinning hair later in life.” 

Look for a treatment that contains salicylic acid, which is a proponent that cleans the scalp more thoroughly than shampoo. But, if you struggle with a skin condition such as psoriasis or eczema, or have open cuts or sores, it’s best to avoid rigorous treatments like these (via Salon Iris).

Healthy hair starts at the root

By washing, styling, and drying your hair, your scalp is often left with the residue of hair products. Plus, if you have a dry, itchy scalp, it can make it difficult for the rest of your hair to grow and stay healthy (via Marie Claire). Since the follicle is the only living part of your hair and the rest is dead skin, it makes sense that you should pay more attention to the root to grow strong strands (via Refinery29).

You can damage your scalp through repeated sunburns, showering in water that’s too hot, and allowing product to build up. Just like with your face, it’s important to exfoliate, moisturize, and cleanse appropriately. This skin on the top of your head calls for the same care protocols as the rest of your body, especially since it has more oil and sweat glands.
