So summer is coming and even though we’re not sure how far we’ll be travelling this year due to the pandemic, it’s time to get ready for sandal weather.
If you suffer from hard skin, keeping your feet in tip-top condition to show them off can be a chore.
So we’ve spoken to some podiatrists about how to remove it safely, and keep it at bay so you can show all the sandals you accidentally ordered in that lockdown shopping spree.
Podiatrist Tony Gavin, who is also CEO of podiatrist membership organisation osgo Healthcare, says that it’s important to stop it building up in the first place.
He explains: ‘It’s best to try to avoid hard skin in the first place, well-fitting shoes with adequate cushioning will reduce the likelihood of build-up.
‘Hard skin can build up on the feet particularly around the heels and with the summer fast approaching we’ll all be reaching for our sandals. The good news is that hard skin is something that you can remove at home.’
If you’re already suffering you can remove it by buying a foot file to scrub it away gently.
Tony adds: ‘Foot files are great tools to remove your hard skin. Use a side to side motion with the file to gently remove the hard skin.
‘Be careful not to over file or apply too much pressure as this can cause the area and the surrounding skin to become sore or irritated.’
Some people file their feet after soaking them in water but Dina Gohil, founder and managing director of DG Podiatrist Ltd., Mayfair says it is best to do it when your feet are dry.
She adds: ‘Using a foot file on a dry foot is a great start, use slow and gentle back and forth directions on the areas of callus.
‘The idea is to go slowly and not aggravate the skin and make it too pink or raw.’
Once all the hard skin is gone, you need to moisturise to keep the skin soft.
Tony says: ‘Use a good moisturiser to re-hydrate your feet. You only need a pea sized amount. Keep up with the moisturising daily and you’ll soon start to notice the difference.
‘A cream that contains urea is recommended, but check with your Podiatrist what strength is best for you.
‘Adding daily moisturising of your feet to your regime will make a huge difference to your foot health in the long term.
Dina recommends CCS Foot Cream after each exfoliation but says that you need to repeat this step several times in a week.
Another option is to use exfoliating socks, which you wear for a period of time and then the skin will peel away over a few days.
Lockdown is a great time to give it a go as they cause peeling and you might not want to show your feet off too much until the process is over.
Dina says that those who are pregnant, have sensitive skin or a metabolic or poor circulation condition, should avoid the socks but she recommends trying Footner Exfoliating Socks if it is safe for you to do so.
Once your feet look smooth and soft, that’s an excuse to buy more sandals, right?
